This interdisciplinary project challenges students to step into the role of a scientist and explore a real-world scenario. Through inquiry, research, experimentation, and problem-solving, students apply knowledge from multiple disciplines to design innovative and practical solutions.
How can we, as Space Material Scientists, choose and use Earth’s materials to survive in space?
Every discipline tests one part of the kit: what materials can do, how resources are managed, and how students explain their choices.
Each subject is a contributing discipline within one shared mission - an evidence tag pinned to the part of the kit it tests. Hover or select a tag to see how that subject earns its place.
Class 2 works as space material scientists, comparing resources, documenting evidence and defending how each item belongs in the survival kit.

This project promotes the responsible and efficient use of resources. Students explore how limited resources can be managed wisely, learning practical survival strategies while developing an understanding of sustainability, conservation, and responsible decision-making.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Students explore strategies to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials, understanding how responsible waste management contributes to environmental sustainability, supports long-term resource conservation and supports survival methods.
Follow the line as the challenge unfolds, each stage building from first questions to tested materials and a final explanation.
Students receive the mission brief and begin asking what humans need to survive when resources are limited.
Students observe and compare materials, gathering evidence about strength, flexibility, weight and usefulness.
Learners decide which resources are essential, which can be reused, and how waste can be reduced.
Teams turn their plans into practical models, testing and improving their survival solutions.
Students present the reasoning behind their kit, explaining how their choices support survival and sustainability.
